TURKEY BOW HUNTING - ILLINOIS 2005

April 28th, 2005

Well Gramps,

I did it again. Opening day for spring turkey, my friend Bill and I had a hen and jake come in on us at day break but no shot. If I had a shotgun the jake would have been…… Well a bow adds to this game. About 7:30 we had two hens and one tom followed by 8 jakes that came into the field where we were set up. Once again, if I had a shotgun….. Well we watched them for about 45 minutes. They wandered about 75 to 100 yards from us then they disappeared. About 10 minutes later they came back but headed out into the field further away from us. They did not respond at all to any calling. Then the tom started back towards us and the rest followed. The tom got about 40 yards from me so I let an arrow fly…. Almost took out his legs. He flew away…. The jakes followed behind him one by one. The next jake came in to range and another arrow took flight and well, he flew away too. A couple more jakes ran after them. The last two jakes came into range, 36 yards to be exact. Well, I was kind of shook up by now and I had only one arrow left. I aimed for the first jake and Bill said wait…. So I did for a sec and then shot at the last jake. He fell in his tracks and I fell over! That was my first turkey and with a bow and arrow. Oh, I just got a new bow on Tuesday night and sighted it in on Wednesday morning. Shot my first turkey today, on Thursday.

Well Gramps I have to go
