CWD Testing

Beginning this year, chronic wasting disease (CWD) testing is now $25 at all DOW submission sites. The DOW has increased hunter testing fees to help cover a larger share of the costs associated with the CWD testing program. Currently, it costs the DOW nearly $100 for processing, testing, head disposal and reporting for each submission.
Testing is voluntary for elk and deer in all Game Management Units for the 2009-10 seasons. Moose testing for CWD is mandatory statewide and is free at all DOW submission sites.
For further information on CWD and the Division's testing program, please visit: http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/BigGame/CWD/

'LEFTOVER' BIG GAME AND TURKEY LICENSES ON SALE AUGUST 11DENVER, Colo.--The Colorado Division of Wildlife today announced that all "leftover" big game and turkey licenses will go on sale Aug. 11. Leftover licenses are limited elk, deer, pronghorn, bear and turkey licenses that did not sell during the spring drawing/application process. "There are a good variety of licenses this year," said Henrietta Turner, DOW license administration manager. "We have over 9,000 deer, 3,000 pronghorn and over 42,000 elk licenses still available." Hunters may purchase leftover licenses on a first-come, first-served basis at statewide license agents, Division of Wildlife offices and by phone (1-800-244-5613). Online purchases will be available at 8:00 a.m. Aug. 12, on the Division of Wildlife Web site. Internet sales are postponed one day to eliminate competition with in-person sales. In order to expedite the purchase process, license buyers should bring the following items when visiting license agents or DOW offices: A driver's license or state identification card, hunter education card, customer identification number or conservation certificate number, and social security card. Hunters purchasing private-land-only licenses (PLOs) must obtain permission from landowners before they can hunt on any private land. Limited licenses are valid only in specific game management units (GMUs) and are available to resident and nonresident hunters.
A list of all available leftover licenses is now available on the Division's Web site at: http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/BigGame/Leftovers/

DOW WORKING TO BALANCE FISHERY AT BLUE MESA RESERVOIR
GUNNISON --
In order to re-balance the fishery at Blue Mesa Reservoir, the Colorado Division of Wildlife is developing plans to remove small- to medium-sized lake trout from the reservoir starting in late fall 2009. Blue Mesa Reservoir, located west of Gunnison, is a very productive fishery and the primary water for kokanee salmon production in the state. Lake trout, which are very efficient predators, are consuming kokanee and causing a significant drop in the population of the fresh water salmon. Rainbow trout survival is also declining due to lake trout predation. At the same time, the size of lake trout is declining because competition for food among the fish is increasing.

TARRYALL SWA CAMP HOSTS NEEDED

DENVER, Colo. The Colorado Division of Wildlife is searching for Camp Hosts at a State Wildlife Area (SWA) to assist staff with public outreach, light maintenance, and other duties as needed. In return, the DOW provides a site for the Hosts to park their recreational vehicle for the season. Colorado's SWAs are set aside to protect wildlife habitat, and for hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating and wildlife viewing opportunities. These activities, and Colorado's magnificent scenery, draw thousands of visitors to the wildlife areas each year. The Wildlife Host Program helps ensure Wildlife Areas are protected and used responsibly.

ANGLERS INVITED TO MEET FISHERY BIOLOGISTS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) invites local anglers to participate in "Angler Roundtable" meetings throughout southeastern Colorado this spring.

The correct location for the Pueblo meeting is the DOW Hunter Ed Bldg., at 2600 W. Mesa. ~

These public forums give anglers a chance to hear the latest information affecting their favorite fishing in waters around southern Colorado; and ask DOW fishery biologists questions about new places they haven't tried yet.

"This is a great opportunity for anglers to get tips, ask questions, and hear what the DOW experts predict for this fishing season," said Doug Krieger, Senior Fisheries Biologist for the Southeast Region.

Over the past few weeks, regional fishery biologists completed their annual forecasts of the best bets for fishing on lakes and streams in 2009. Topics will include fish stocking plans, fishing regulations, zebra mussel boating restrictions, water levels, fish population data, fishing access, whirling disease, high lake management, and any other fishery related issues anglers want to hear about.

People are encouraged to bring questions about their favorite lakes and streams.
The forums are in the following locations:

Colorado Springs: Tues., March 10, DOW Office, 4255 Sinton Rd., 6:30 - 9 p.m.

La Junta: Tues., April 7, Holiday Inn Express, 32994 W. Hwy. 50, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Cole, Merry Christmas to you too!! Sorry about being a little late.

Talked to Bobby the other day and he said his bunch filled the L1 season. Ketter, Dereck and I were the only ones I know that were dumb enough to hunt the L2 season again. Dereck got his cow, nice big one. Lot of snow and cold again this year, saw 22 below one day. Saw a lot of game and some nice mature bulls. We stayed in Fairplay again, it's sure nice to come back to a nice warm cabin and hot meal. I'm still recovering from my back problem, it's coming along pretty good. Maybe next year I'll be able to get out and do some real hunting, might try for a bull tag, sure see a lot of them up there anymore.

Cole, thanks for the pictures of the Montana street gang, posted them on the Tarryall Elk Camp slide show at: http://tarryallelkcamp.blogspot.com/ they are sure healthy looking bulls, must be from the Yellowstone area.

If you happen to be going to Cabelas you might want to check out the coupons that are available just below the hit counter on http://tarryallelkcamp.blogspot.com/

Hampton and Rabin said hunters would be best off by keeping it simple and returning to the most basic advice.
“We always give this advice, but over and over again we are amazed by the number of people that don’t pay attention. Get off the road,” Hampton said. “Studies show animals are going to be at least one-quarter to one-half mile off a road, and when I say a road, I mean if you drove an ATV up it, you need to be one-half-mile from it.”
He also suggested that hunters concentrate on the higher elevations.
Elk won’t be driven from their high summer grounds until snow covers their supply of food.

NEW TARRYALL RESERVOIR & ANTERO RESERVOIR BOATING REGULATIONS AND ZEBRA & QUAGGA MUSSEL INSPECTIONS

The Colorado Division of Wildlife has initiated a boat inspection procedure at Tarryall Reservoir along with new boating regulations to help stop the spread of Zebra Mussels, Quagga Mussels, and other aquatic nuisance species.

Trailered boats will be allowed on Tarryall Reservoir from 6 A.M. to 10 P.M. Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays after going through an inspection, but prohibited on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Trailered boats must use the north boat ramp off of Park County Road 77 and must be off of the reservoir by 10 P.M. on the above mentioned days. Tarryall Reservoir will be closed to trailored boat Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Hand launched boats, such as float tubes, personal pontoon craft, non-motorized row boats, etc. will be allowed on Tarryall Reservoir at all times and will not need to go through an inspection.

Trailered boats will be allowed on Antero Reservoir from ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset, seven days a week after going through an inspection. All trailered boats must use the north boat ramp and must be off the reservoir ½ hour after sunset.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife is asking boaters to come to any lake in the state with their boat CLEANED, DRAINED AND DRY to help stop the spread of aquatic nuisance species and to speed up the boat inspection procedure. This means that no water should be in the bilge area, ballast tanks, live wells, anchor well, etc. and the drain plug should be pulled out. Any boat that does come to the reservoir with water will be subject to a higher level of inspection and possibly need to be disinfected before being allowed on the reservoir.

Zebra and Quagga mussels can clog pipes, valves, gates and any water-related equipment or surface. They can ruin boats by jamming equipment and causing motor damage, and they can harm fisheries by consuming beneficial plankton and disrupting the food chain. However, Antero and Tarryall Reservoirs are not known to be infected with zebra or quagga mussels at this time. The vessel inspections are designed to help prevent these waters from becoming infected with zebra/quagga mussel or other Aquatic Nuisance Species.
For more information on non-native species threatening Colorado waters, go to:

or visit your local DOW office for information.

ANTERO RESERVOIR TO REOPEN BOATING JULY 10

The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) and Denver Water are pleased to announce the return of trailered boat use at Antero Reservoir. Reopening on July 10th, boat usage will be restricted to the North boat ramp where trained personnel will inspect and decontaminate watercraft 7 days a week, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Danger lurks in north woods, neighbors say

April 13, 2008 - 1:15AM

By R. SCOTT RAPPOLD

THE GAZETTE

Something is stalking the hills and neighborhoods on the northwest side of Colorado Springs - something that is part man's best friend, part fearsome predator.

It's a pack of wolf-dog hybrids, untamed and dangerous, according to some northwest Colorado Springs residents. And several of the residents are frustrated by authorities' lack of action.

Although animal control officials are not aware of wolf-dog hybrids in the area, and residents don't have pictures as proof, they insist they aren't just crying wolf.

"Everyone needs to become aware they are dangerous," said Walt Baker, who lives in the area and is spreading the word about the animals. "They have no fear of man, yet they have the killer instincts of a wolf."

Exactly where they came from is a matter of conjecture. Residents believe they were let loose during the 2002 Hayman fire by a property owner who had nowhere to keep them.

Hybrids, which were popular pets in the 1990s, have a mixed ancestry of wolf and dog, usually Alaskan malamute, husky or German shepherd.

The hybrids bred and migrated east, so the story goes, appearing for the past two years in the spring and summer in neighborhoods south of the Air Force Academy, around the Woodmen Road and Centennial Boulevard area, residents say. It's a wooded, hilly area next to Pike National Forest, where deer and coyotes roam like stray cats.

Dawn Olson, who lives on Starstone Court, says she was walking on Dutchrock Road two years ago when one came bounding out of the bushes.

"It looked completely like a wolf. It didn't look like a dog at all, and a lot larger than a coyote," Olson recalled. "I froze when she jumped out of the bush, and luckily she froze, too."

The animal backed away from Olson, she said, and she from it, and another one came out of the bushes. Both ran off.

"It was scary and I felt really fortunate they weren't feeling aggressive at the moment, because I hear they have been," Olson said.
They were bigger and more muscular than coyotes, with bigger muzzles, she said.

Roger Lemmon, who lives on Sierra Pine Drive, has only seen them from a distance, but he is sure they aren't coyotes.

"I know what a wolf is, I know what a coyote is, and I can distinguish between the two, and these two were wolves," Lemmon said.

Baker said he has seen them twice, once near his house, when one bared its teeth at him, and once while camping near Rampart Range Road.

Just how many there are is difficult to tell, because officially, they don't exist.

Baker called the Colorado Division of Wildlife, only to be told they don't handle hybrids.

"We would forward the calls to the Humane Society (of the Pikes Peak Region), as the Division of Wildlife does not have any jurisdiction over wolf-dog hybrids," said DOW spokesman Michael Seraphin. "We deal with 100 percent wolves - if we had any in Colorado," Seraphin said.

DOW OFFICERS TO ENFORCE MOTORIZED VEHICLE REGULATIONS ON FEDERAL LAND

Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) officers will now be enforcing motorized vehicle regulations on federal public lands as specified in Colorado House Bill 1069.

This bill, introduced in January of this year, was signed by Gov. Bill Ritter on March 20.

The measure specifies that DOW officers along with other state law enforcement officers will now be able to enforce motorized vehicle restrictions on public lands. Officers can now issue tickets in the field to those who violate motorized vehicle laws.

“Our officers will certainly use substantial discretion during the early stages in carrying out this enforcement. It’s going to take some time to get signs in place and for people to have access to updated maps and information,” said Rob Firth, Chief of Law Enforcement for the Colorado DOW. “We recognize that motorized vehicles have a substantial role in enhancing outdoor recreation in many areas of the state. This legislation gives us the ability to act when it comes to the most blatant violators such as when sensitive habitat is harmed or when hunters or outdoor enthusiasts have their activities interfered with by those who knowingly violate the regulations in place.

Enforcement will be incidental, as the DOW will not be adding any new officers or resources to specifically enforce this regulation. DOW officers will issue citations in conjunction with carrying out their current duties.Penalties established for those who violate these regulations include a misdemeanor charge and a fine of $100. If the violation occurs while a person is hunting, fishing or trapping, 10 suspension points would also be assessed against their hunting/fishing privileges.

A person who commits a violation in a federal wilderness area would be charged with a misdemeanor and face a stiffer penalty, including a $200 fine and 15 license suspension points.

Anyone caught removing, destroying or defacing any sign related to motorized vehicle regulations will be charged with a misdemeanor and face a $100 fine. A penalty of 5 suspension points would be assessed to their hunting or fishing license.

All fines can be sent through the mail, and no court appearance is necessary unless otherwise requested by the defendant.

Ranchers, law enforcement officers and others with the authorization to operate a motor vehicle on federal public land are exempt from these regulations.

“This bill is the result of many people coming together in an effort to preserve public lands in Colorado. It addresses the growing problem of unauthorized motor vehicle use in prohibited areas and we look forward to assisting federal agencies in enforcement on public lands," said Tom Remington, Director of the Division of Wildlife.

Supporters of this bill include: State Representative Kathleen Curry (D-Gunnison) who sponsored the bill in the house, State Senator Lois Tochtrop (D-Thornton) who sponsored the bill in the senate, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, the Colorado Wildlife Federation, Trout Unlimited, the Colorado Off-Highway Vehicle Coalition, the Colorado Mountain Club, Colorado Counties Inc., the Colorado Bow Hunters Association, and other local and national organizations.
