CWD Testing
Beginning this year, chronic wasting disease (CWD) testing is now $25 at all DOW submission sites. The DOW has increased hunter testing fees to help cover a larger share of the costs associated with the CWD testing program. Currently, it costs the DOW nearly $100 for processing, testing, head disposal and reporting for each submission.
Testing is voluntary for elk and deer in all Game Management Units for the 2009-10 seasons. Moose testing for CWD is mandatory statewide and is free at all DOW submission sites.

Leftover Licenses
Big game licenses are still available for the upcoming seasons. 'LEFTOVER' BIG GAME AND TURKEY LICENSES ON SALE AUGUST 11DENVER, Colo.--The Colorado Division of Wildlife today announced that all "leftover" big game and turkey licenses will go on sale Aug. 11. Leftover licenses are limited elk, deer, pronghorn, bear and turkey licenses that did not sell during the spring drawing/application process. "There are a good variety of licenses this year," said Henrietta Turner, DOW license administration manager. "We have over 9,000 deer, 3,000 pronghorn and over 42,000 elk licenses still available." Hunters may purchase leftover licenses on a first-come, first-served basis at statewide license agents, Division of Wildlife offices and by phone (1-800-244-5613). Online purchases will be available at 8:00 a.m. Aug. 12, on the Division of Wildlife Web site. Internet sales are postponed one day to eliminate competition with in-person sales. In order to expedite the purchase process, license buyers should bring the following items when visiting license agents or DOW offices: A driver's license or state identification card, hunter education card, customer identification number or conservation certificate number, and social security card. Hunters purchasing private-land-only licenses (PLOs) must obtain permission from landowners before they can hunt on any private land. Limited licenses are valid only in specific game management units (GMUs) and are available to resident and nonresident hunters.

DOW WORKING TO BALANCE FISHERY AT BLUE MESA RESERVOIR
GUNNISON --
In order to re-balance the fishery at Blue Mesa Reservoir, the Colorado Division of Wildlife is developing plans to remove small- to medium-sized lake trout from the reservoir starting in late fall 2009. Blue Mesa Reservoir, located west of Gunnison, is a very productive fishery and the primary water for kokanee salmon production in the state. Lake trout, which are very efficient predators, are consuming kokanee and causing a significant drop in the population of the fresh water salmon. Rainbow trout survival is also declining due to lake trout predation. At the same time, the size of lake trout is declining because competition for food among the fish is increasing. GUNNISON --

TARRYALL SWA CAMP HOSTS NEEDED
DENVER, Colo. The Colorado Division of Wildlife is searching for Camp Hosts at a State Wildlife Area (SWA) to assist staff with public outreach, light maintenance, and other duties as needed. In return, the DOW provides a site for the Hosts to park their recreational vehicle for the season. Colorado's SWAs are set aside to protect wildlife habitat, and for hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating and wildlife viewing opportunities. These activities, and Colorado's magnificent scenery, draw thousands of visitors to the wildlife areas each year. The Wildlife Host Program helps ensure Wildlife Areas are protected and used responsibly.

DENVER, Colo. --May 1 marks the opening for the warm weather fishing season at Tarryall Reservoir.

Anglers can look forward to another good season of rainbow trout fishing, as well as Snake River cutthroat trout in the 11-16 inch size range with an occasional large brown trout. Northern pike catch rates are increasing and so is the size structure. Anglers are encouraged to harvest all northern pike caught at Tarryall Reservoir.

ANGLERS INVITED TO MEET FISHERY BIOLOGISTS
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) invites local anglers to participate in "Angler Roundtable" meetings throughout southeastern Colorado this spring.
The correct location for the Pueblo meeting is the DOW Hunter Ed Bldg., at 2600 W. Mesa. ~
These public forums give anglers a chance to hear the latest information affecting their favorite fishing in waters around southern Colorado; and ask DOW fishery biologists questions about new places they haven't tried yet.
"This is a great opportunity for anglers to get tips, ask questions, and hear what the DOW experts predict for this fishing season," said Doug Krieger, Senior Fisheries Biologist for the Southeast Region.
Over the past few weeks, regional fishery biologists completed their annual forecasts of the best bets for fishing on lakes and streams in 2009. Topics will include fish stocking plans, fishing regulations, zebra mussel boating restrictions, water levels, fish population data, fishing access, whirling disease, high lake management, and any other fishery related issues anglers want to hear about.
People are encouraged to bring questions about their favorite lakes and streams.
